Fabric of Society

Slide 1 Slide 2 Slide 3 Slide 4

For centuries, great thinkers have considered the relationship between a citizen and his or her society. The quotes above raise a number of interesting questions. Do we owe our allegiance to the United States, or are we part of a worldwide community? Is American citizenship something that must be earned, or is it enough to be born here? Should the collective efforts of the citizens of a state be directed toward the promotion of individual liberty or toward the common good?

Hundreds of seniors at the following 25 high schools across California have submitted essays on what citizenship means to them in the fifth annual Fabric of Society competition. The entries are now being judged. De La Rosa & Co. will award a $2,000 scholarship to at least one winner from each school.
